PHOTOS: Medfield Baseball Tops Norton, 10-3 to Open Season
The Medfield High School baseball team opened the 2012 season with a decisive victory over Tri-Valley League foe Norton Thursday.
Medfield sent unheralded pitcher Matt Casieri to the mound in the Warriors season opener against Norton Thursday and the six-foot lefthander delivered.
Casieri consistently threw strikes and kept Norton hitters off balance, limiting the Lancers to three runs in a 10-3 Medfield victory to begin the year.
Medfield head coach Matt Marenghi called Casieri's effort Thursday "gutsy" and said he was impressed with what he saw from a player that has not pitched much at the varsity level.

"He didn't pitch much last year but he throws strikes," Marenghi said.
Medfield showed it once again will be fielding a potent offense in 2012 as the Warriors' bats came to life in the third and fourth innings. Tied at two in the bottom of the third, Medfield plated three runs on RBI hits by TJ Valente (a double), Corey Chung ( a single) and Casieri (a double).

The Warriors broke it open in the next inning, plating four more runs in the fourth to take a commanding 9-2 lead. John Buchanan had the lone RBI hit in the inning as Medfield manufactured three runs off of Norton errors.
Marenghi said he was pleased with the team's defense and pitching, considering it was the first game of the season.
"These guys can hit all winter but I was happy with the way we played defense and the way Casieri pitched," he said.
Medfield returns to action Monday when it travels to Hopkinton for a 3:45 p.m. game.
