Remembering Wheelock Schools, Franklin, the Service Dog

For all those who knew and loved Franklin, the Wheelock School service dog that passed last summer, please read this beautiful farewell....

A Farewell to Our Dear Franklin

The following "Farewell to Franklin" the beloved Wheelock School Service dog, was written by recently retired Wheelock School Principal, Holli Caulfield.

"We gather here today to celebrate the extraordinary life of Franklin Kennedy, a beloved member of our Wheelock School family. Franklin was more than just a dog; he was a constant source of joy, comfort, and love. His presence enriched our lives in countless ways and left an enduring
mark on our hearts.

Dogs, as we all know, have a special ability to touch our souls. They offer unconditional love, unwavering loyalty, and a comforting presence. Franklin possessed these qualities in abundance. He was a gentle giant, always eager to greet us with a wagging tail and a warm smile. His soft fur was a favorite for cuddles, and his patient ear was always available for our secrets and stories.

For many of us, Franklin was our first experience with responsibility, care, and empathy. We learned about compassion as we watched him interact with his friends, both human and canine. We discovered the importance of patience as we waited for his gentle spirit to guide us. And
we experienced the power of unconditional love through his unwavering devotion.

Franklin’s impact extends far beyond our classroom walls. He helped us to build confidence, improve our reading skills, and develop a deeper connection to the world around us. He taught us the value of friendship, the importance of teamwork, and the joy of simply being present.

We are eternally grateful to the Kennedy family for sharing Franklin with us. Their generosity has touched our lives in profound ways. Because of them, we have all been blessed with the extraordinary gift of Franklin’s companionship.

While our hearts are heavy with sadness at Franklin’s departure, we find comfort in knowing that he is now running free, chasing squirrels, and enjoying all the apples he can eat. He is at peace, and we are grateful for the beautiful memories he has given us.

Let us remember Franklin with love and gratitude. Let us cherish the moments we shared with him. And let us carry forward the lessons he taught us about kindness, compassion, and the enduring power of the human-animal bond.

Thank you, Franklin, for being the most wonderful friend a school could ask for. You will be forever in our hearts."
