Self-Defense Classes for Women, by Women
Presented by Yoga at the Ashram
Millis, MA, (February 20, 2017) – Yoga at the Ashram is excited to announce they are now offering Self-Defense classes designed specifically for women and taught by women. The classes, held the last Sunday of each month from 4:00-5:00 p.m., are led by Jeanne Donnelly and Erica Daloia. Jeanne holds a 4th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Erica a 3rd degree. Both instructors hold Master’s degrees in Mental Health Counseling.
Open to women ages 12 and up, the classes will focus on the physical and psychological aspects of prevention through safety and awareness. Techniques covered will include instruction in avoidance, blocking, striking, grab and choke releases, as well as ground and weapon defense.
In addition to learning how to protect themselves and their families, classes are taught in a comfortable and welcoming environment where women support and empower each other.
“The unfortunate reality is that we live in a world where anyone can become a victim anywhere. We want to give women an opportunity to not only learn self-defense, but also to continue to practice and enhance the skills they’ve learned. Regular training helps women develop skills to the point that they become automatic and more effective,” stated Jeanne.
Jeanne began self-defense training while working as a rape crisis counselor in 1989. Part of her position was teaching rape prevention workshops at schools. This led her to begin martial art training. Counseling women who had been victimized also led her to develop a devotion to helping women learn to defend themselves in order to avoid being victimized. Jeanne’s daughter Erica has been involved with martial arts nearly her entire life, beginning her training at the age of five.
Jeanne and Erica also offer weekly martial art classes in Tae Kwon Do for women who want to train consistently, advance in rank, and learn more advanced skills. These classes also incorporate techniques from other martial art styles and are specifically geared toward women.
