Sgt. Daniel J. McCarthy Memorial Unveiling Ceremony (Updated)

On 6/1/19 the family and friends of Sgt. Daniel J. McCarthy gathered in front of the Public Safety Building for the Memorial unveiling.

On Saturday, June 1st, at 12pm, the family and friends of Sgt. Daniel J. McCarthy gathered in front of the Public Safety Building for the Memorial Unveiling Ceremony in his memory.

Kim McCarthy, and three of her five children, daughters Kasey and Courtney and son Patrick, along with her grandson and granddaughter sat in the front rows of seats placed outside facing the Memorial and podium.

The crowd was filled with Medfield Police, Medfield Fire, Walpole Police, Franklin Police and past and retired members of the Medfield Police Dept. as well as many members of the community. Police in attendance wore #16 black mourning bands on their badge and flags were lowered to half-staff.

MPD Chief Michelle Guerette gave welcoming remarks and Deputy Chief John Wilhelmi spoke with a heavy heart about his close friendship with McCarthy and also thanked Anna Suojanen who was in high school at the time of McCarthy's passing because she had made a collage of newspaper clippings and gave it to the force back in 2000. It now is placed in the glass case in the lobby for all to see.

Selectman Chair, Gus Murby spoke briefly and Kim McCarthy thanked everyone involved and spoke lovingly about her husband. The National Anthem was sung by Boy Scout Paul Narkewich, retired MPD Chief Bob Meaney played "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes and Fr. Steve Zukas, Pastor at St. Edwards said an opening prayer and gave a blessing at the Memorial. Town Administrator Kristine Trierweiler and Selectman Mike Marcucci also attended.

The children and grandchildren of Sgt. McCarthy unveiled the Memorial, and just as McCarthy's image was visible, his toddler granddaughter exclaimed, "Grampy"!

Family members and police groups all posed with the Memorial after the ceremony and enjoyed refreshments in the station donated by Country Kitchen Donuts of Millis.
