The EPA reports that clothing and textile recycling has a significant impact on reducing greenhouse gases, yet clothing is not typically considered a recyclable. The average American citizen discards 81 pounds of textiles annually despite the fact that 95% of worn or torn clothing can be recycled, along with many other textile items. Only about 15 % are recycled each year, with 85% going into landfills. That is equivalent to 26 billion pounds or 310,000 truckloads of clothing material. More than $100 million of funding is generated each year world-wide for charities from second-hand clothing sales, but there is much more we can do.
Please help divert textiles from landfills by bringing items such as these to the textile drive Nov. 7 and 8.
