VIDEO: Seniors Own the Night in Medfield's 5-0 Win over Millis

The Medfield High School girls' soccer team completed its first ever unbeaten regular season Tuesday after a 5-0 victory over Millis on Senior Night.

The last goal was arguably the prettiest.

With a 4-0 lead over Millis more than halfway through the second half Tuesday, the girls’ soccer team was in cruise control when senior Alexa Carrieri took a shot from about 15 yards out.

The ball, struck perfectly, rocketed past several Millis defenders and into the back of the net, just under the crossbar.

Carrieri’s teammates gave her a hero’s welcome as they swarmed her on the field. Her coach, Michael LaFrancesca showed equal enthusiasm for his senior forward – delivering an animated fist pump in front of a screaming Medfield bench.

That goal capped the scoring for Medfield in what was a dominating and impressive effort Tuesday. And while that fifth goal won't look like much in the box score, the importance of that tally was evident in the tears of joy running down Carrieri’s face as the teams readied for play to resume. She had scored a goal … on her night, Senior Night.

Carrieri was one of five seniors honored Tuesday in their final regular season match at Medfield High School. The other seniors recognized: Cassie Baird, Mary O’Driscoll, Caroline Russell and Sara Isaacson.

Heading into Tuesday's match, the defending Division 2 State Champions had already locked up its second straight Tri-Valley League title and secured a spot in the MIAA Division 2 State Tournament. All that was left to play for was an unbeaten season and the seniors.

Medfield certainly showed up to play for both.

The Warriors (14-0-4) cruised past Millis and were appropriately led by its seniors.

Three of the team’s five goals were scored by three of its five seniors. Isaacson netted the game’s first goal just over seven minutes into the match. Sophomore forward Ellie Siino scored a minute later to give Medfield a quick 2-0 lead and that score held heading into halftime.

Baird joined Issacson on the senior score sheet less than three minutes into the second half, converting on a rebound off a shot from junior defender Jen Narlee, who scored at the 24:55 mark on a header off a corner kick from Issacson. Then came Carrieri’s goal with 15:30 to play – securing Medfield’s unbeaten season.

Before the game, Medfield’s seniors were recognized with flowers and posed for photos with family members. Then all five took the field to begin the game, with O’Driscoll getting an honorary start at center for the Warriors. She received the ball and promptly kicked it out of bounds to draw a substitution. She left the field to a cheering crowd and teammates and was greeted with a hug from LaFrancesca.

From there, Medfield continued to play the aggressive, ball controlling style of soccer the program has become accustomed to over the past two seasons enroute to its first ever unbeaten season. The Warriors finished 2010 15-1-2, winning their first ever TVL title on the way to their first ever Division 2 State Championship.

A year later, they are prepared to defend that title and others have taken notice of their strong play this year. Medfield ranks first in the state in ESPN Boston’s Top 20 girls’ soccer team rankings.

Medfield will await word of its first opponent in the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional State Tournament. The pairings are announced by the MIAA Thursday.
