Your Guide to MEMO’S 2011 Discover Medfield Day

Medfield Day begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with opening ceremonies and will continue with a day of fall fun for the entire family until 3 p.m.

MEMO’s 32nd Annual Discover Medfield Day is set to take place Saturday around Meeting House Pond along Friary and North Streets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The annual fair includes live entertainment, a food court, a silent auction for the benefit of the MEMO scholarship fund and prizes for the best decorated booths in a variety of categories, including this year’s theme: Medfield Treasures. There will also be a “treasure hunt” for those who want to participate, with prizes being awarded at the end of the day to winners.

Plenty to see and plenty to do with the family Saturday so in an effort to make sure you don't miss anything, here’s your one-stop guide to everything you need to know about Medfield Day:

Medfield Day Forecast: The National Weather Service, based in Taunton, calls for mostly sunny conditions on Saturday with a high near 64. North wind between 3 and 7 mph.

Roads Closed During Medfield Day: North Street, Frairy Street and Upham Road are closed to traffic during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. as the fair sets up and breaks down.

Cost: Free admission but cost of food, individual booths and activities varies.

Medfield Day Schedule of Events:

  • 8:30 a.m. –
  • 9 a.m. – Medfield Day Opening Ceremonies  (color guard from Beckwith Post 110 American Legion and National Anthem).
  • 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. – at

  • 1 to 3 p.m. – The band, “” will be this year’s live musical entertainment, performing on the Medfield Day stage.

Other Entertainment: Morning performers will consist of students of Paulette's Dance Studio, the Close Shaves men’s harmony group, The Ngoma Dzakanaka Marimba Band from grades five and six of the and Irish Step Dancers from the Greene-O'Leary School of Irish Dancing. Be sure to check out the music at the Dwight Derby House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be two musicians to perform Civil War reenactment music. Local trumpeter Tom Duprey on cornet and John Dirac on banjo will perform. 

Kids Alley: This area in the parking lot offers plenty of fun for the kids, including a popular trackless train, two giant inflated slides, one smaller slide, a 50-foot inflated obstacle course and three enclosed bouncers. 

Food Court: Includes sausages and hotdogs prepared by the Beckwith Post American Legion and the . 

Games & Prizes: In order to participate in the Medfield Treasure Hunt, visitors must pick up a bingo type card that has rows of names of treasures to find and have verified around the fair grounds. There will be two age divisions, for 12-17 year-old winners, the prize is a $25 gift card to the Blue Moon. For adults 18 years and older, the prize will be a gift card valued at $50. For all players, the prize is the fun of finding the treasures on your card. Not every card will be the same and cards will be available at the MEMO booth when the fair begins at 9 a.m. 

Silent Auction and Raffle: Among this year’s auction treasures will be a Boston Celtics, team-autographed basketball, thanks to team president and Medfield resident Rich Gotham. Also supporting his town, former Red sox winning pitcher Curt Schilling has autographed his game jersey No. 38 to go to the highest bidder. An autographed photo of Clay Buchholz has been donated by the Boston Red Sox. The silent auction and raffle benefit the scholarship fund that provides monetary awards annually from MEMO to graduating seniors of and Tri-County Regional Vocational High Schools, planning business or trade careers, from the proceeds of this event. Scholarship recipients this year included: Connor Blackmon, Michael Keleher and Lindsey Ghegan of MHS and Sarah Robertson at Tri-County.

Some Booths to Check Out: Stop by the Medfield Patch Booth to receive some free Patch gear, meet local editor Jeremie Smith and learn more about the website as it approaches its one-year anniversary of launching in December and serving the Town of Medfield on a daily basis. Stop by the Pink Power Booth, which will be on North Street near the pond and will offer free hand knit scarves with a donation to the American Cancer Society. Checks can be made out to the cancer and cash will be accepted as well. Most of the scarves are pink in recognition of breast cancer awareness in October. … Stop by the Girl Scouts Booth Saturday to register your daughter. … Stop by the First Baptist Church of Medfield’s Booth to receive a free gift and learn more about their annual “Rally Day” event to start a new Sunday School year on Sept. 18 at 10:30 a.m.
