Medford Police Lieutenant Retires After Prominent 40-year Career

MEDFORD, MA — The police department celebrated the retirement of an officer after four decades of service.

Lieutenant Michael Fahey called it a career last week after exactly forty years working for the department. Fahey was sworn in as a full-time police officer on May 4, 1986 after a short time spent with both the city’s Special Police Division and the Park Police. According to the department, the former United States Army Corporal realized that law enforcement was the right career path for him from a very young age.

The Fahey family represents Medford police across multiple generations. Michael Fahey formerly served alongside his father, former Auxiliary Police Chief Thomas Fahey and his brother Patrick Fahey until his death in 2007. Thomas Fahey’s career spanned more than 30 years and included times in which he led the Special Police Division and the Park Police, which ultimately served as the gateway for his son to become an officer years later. Like his son, Thomas Fahey also served in the military as a Chief Warrant Officer for the National Guard in the Korean War.

Michael Fahey’s son, Cameron Fahey, was sworn in in January 2022 and has served alongside his father ever since. He will now be the next steward of the family in Medford police.

Michael Fahey spent the last decade of his career as a Lieutenant. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2008 not long before his final promotion.

Chief Jack Buckley expressed gratitude for the impact Michael Fahey had on the city during his career and wished him a lengthy retirement.

“Over the course of four decades, Lieutenant Fahey served this department and community with professionalism, leadership, integrity, and dedication,” the department said in a statement. “His impact on the officers he mentored, the colleagues he worked besides, and the countless residents he served will not be forgotten.”
