Masked Man Leads Medford Police On Highway Foot Chase
The pursuit took place early Friday morning.
MEDFORD, MA — The police department announced an arrest has been made in the aftermath of an incident that took place early Friday morning.
Joseph Kahler, 34, of Dorchester, has been charged with Possession of burglarious instruments, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, misleading a police investigation, receiving stolen property worth more than $1,200, and 12 additional outstanding warrants. Officers arrived at a home on Horne Avenue at approximately 5:30 a.m. in response to an emergency call from a resident who reported seeing a man outside wearing a ski mask and all-black clothing. The person was reportedly concerned about the person’s presence due to a recent epidemic of motor vehicle break-ins in the city.
Police soon spotted the masked man on Gaston Street, and he fled on foot after a brief interaction. The foot pursuit led across Interstate Route 93 before the suspect was ultimately apprehended in the Middlesex Fells Reservation.

The man was later identified as Kahler in the hours after his arrest. The State Police’s K9 Unit contributed to catching him during the chase.
“We commend our officers for their quick response and teamwork in bringing this situation to a swift resolution and helping provide some peace of mind to our residents,” the department said. “We also want to thank the caller for having the awareness to report suspicious activity, which played an important role in this outcome.”

According to police, Kahler will be arraigned in Somerville District Court before the end of the day.
