Medford Police Promotes Veteran Officer To Lieutenant

MEDFORD, MA — The police department officially promoted Christopher Covino to the rank of Lieutenant during a swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, recognizing his years of service and leadership within the department

Covino was sworn into his new role surrounded by relatives, friends, and colleagues as department officials highlighted his progression through the ranks since joining the Medford Police Department in 2018.

Covino has served in a variety of assignments during his tenure, including as a patrol officer, field training officer, patrol sergeant following his promotion in 2022, and most recently as Sergeant of the Traffic Division. In addition to his supervisory responsibilities, Covino has also played a major role in department-wide training initiatives, providing CPR, first aid, and tactical medicine instruction to sworn personnel. Covino will now also serve as the department’s Night Shift Commander, a role that involves leading overnight patrol operations and providing frontline supervision.

“Lt. Covino has consistently demonstrated professionalism, leadership, and a strong commitment to both the department and the community,” the department said in a statement. “We are proud to welcome him into this new assignment and look forward to his continued service.”

Covino’s law enforcement and emergency response background extends beyond his work in Medford. Before joining the department, he attended the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where he studied emergency management and also worked as an emergency medical technician at Massachusetts General Hospital. He additionally served in the United States Navy Reserve as a Hospital Corpsman, providing medical support and training for military personnel.

During his military service, Covino was deployed to Okinawa, Japan, with the U.S. Marine Corps and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his work as a line corpsman and medical trainer in 2020.

Covino has also been involved in police training and preparedness initiatives throughout his career. In prior department profiles, he emphasized the importance of continuing education and high professional standards within modern policing, saying officers must constantly adapt and educate themselves in order to better serve the community.

Covino was promoted to Sergeant in 2022 alongside several other officers. At the time, city leaders commended the department’s emerging leadership team and expressed confidence in Covino’s future within the organization.

Wednesday’s ceremony continued a longstanding tradition within Massachusetts police departments, where family members and colleagues often gather to celebrate promotional milestones and new leadership appointments. Loved ones stood nearby as Covino took the oath of office and officially assumed the responsibilities of Lieutenant.

The department said it expects Covino’s combined background in patrol operations, emergency medicine, officer training, and supervision to serve the department well as he transitions into his newest leadership role.
