Medford Branching Out To Find Tree Committee Members

Tree Committee members work closely with the Tree Warden to manage the city's trees and forests.

MEDFORD, MA — The city is looking for residents to serve on a newly formed Tree Committee that will advise the city on the care and management of trees on public property.

The nine-member committee was created to support the city’s work on maintaining a healthy and sustainable urban forest. According to the city, members will advise the Tree Warden on issues that may include public tree hearings, tree maintenance plans, urban forest management and efforts to promote equitable tree planting across Medford.

The city said residents from a variety of backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including young residents ages 15 to 22 and people with experience in urban forestry or landscape design. All members will serve on a volunteer, unpaid basis.

The initial appointments will be divided into staggered terms. Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn will appoint three members to three-year terms, three members to two-year terms and three members to one-year terms. After those first appointments, all future terms will last three years.

The committee’s work could give residents a more direct role in shaping how Medford handles trees in public spaces, from maintenance planning to broader questions about the city’s environmental quality and tree canopy.
