Medford Diner To Remain Open Under New Ownership

Less than a month after announcing permanent closure, this eatery has been resurrected.

MEDFORD, MA — A longtime restaurant that was expected to close its doors will instead remain open under new ownership.

Paul Revere Restaurant announced the change in plans this week, saying the West Medford restaurant will continue operating after its current owners step away. The restaurant had previously announced that it would close permanently on Sunday, Aug. 30, after owners Joseph Schanda Jr. and Joseph Schanda Sr. said an unexpected medical hardship made continuing daily operations no longer possible.

"We're thrilled to announce Paul Revere Restaurant will continue under new ownership," the restaurant said.

The Schandas said they are passing the restaurant to two longtime Medford residents who plan to continue the spirit and legacy of the longtime neighborhood establishment. The identities of the new owners have not yet been announced, with the restaurant telling customers to stay tuned for additional updates.

"For more than 25 years, it has been our honor and privilege to own the Paul Revere Restaurant and serve the wonderful Medford community," ownership said. "Although this is the end of a chapter for us, we couldn't be more excited to pass the lantern to two longtime Medford residents who will carry on the spirit and legacy of this special place."

Located at 447 High St., Paul Revere Restaurant has been a fixture in West Medford for decades and dates back to the 1930s, according to the Medford Historical Society and Museum.

The restaurant has primarily served breakfast and lunch, offering traditional diner staples including eggs, pancakes, French toast, omelets, sandwiches, and other dishes. Its menu also draws heavily from its Revolutionary War namesake, featuring dishes named for figures and symbols including John Hancock, John Adams, King George III, Crispus Attucks, and the Two Lanterns.

The announcement comes after the Schandas said last month that discussions with their family and medical team led them to prioritize their health and step away from the restaurant's daily operations. At the time, they thanked customers, staff, vendors, and partners for supporting the restaurant throughout their more than 25 years of ownership.

Additional information about the new owners and the restaurant's future operations is expected to be announced at a later date.
