Ask Yourself Why

Goal Check In- April (accountability is key)

Did you make a New Year’s Resolution for 2014? That was over 12 weeks ago. Seems like yesterday right? Have you seen progress? ¼ the year is over. What are you waiting for? Your health should be on the top of your to-do list as without it you cannot do the things that follow it.  In order to reach your health and fitness goals you must believe you can do it and find your motivation. Figure out your why. Your why, and your motivation will be deeply tied together.

Why do you even want to start a fitness regimen? Why do you want to change your eating habits? If I was answering this questions it would be something like this, I want to stick to my training plan to not just finish but crush the Ironman in June. I want to follow my eating plan to lose 15 pounds by the end of June. Now, while those seem like good answers and they are,  I want you to dig deeper. Go for the real answers, the ones you may  not even want to say out loud.  For me, even though my goal seems cut and dry, there is a bigger, deeper why. This why  has more depth. I want to follow my training plan so I can beat my time from last year in the Ironman. I want to prove to myself, that I am better, I have learned and put the knowledge I have learned in the past year to use on myself. I want to prove to myself I can follow through, I am accountable. Also, someday far away my why is I want to go to Kona. If you do not know, Kona is, it is the Mecca of Ironman, of triathlon. Now, I am no where close to setting foot on this beautiful island. Consider it as realistic for me now as if I told you I was going to swim to Australia. Not happening. However, many moons from now, I think I may have a chance. Why not?  Even if the opportunity comes as a lottery bid into the race, I know I will need every ounce of training possible, all the experience I am gaining now, as it is the toughest race around.

Losing weight will make me faster which ties into my goal of crushing the Ironman. Also, I know by losing weight I will be placing less demands on my body. My heart will be under less stress and my joints will be under less stress. This will allow me to compete in this racing longer. It increases the chance of me crossing that finish line on the big island. It will allow me to do what I love, what gives me such a sense of self worth and confidence, longer. The past couple years, I have not put much emphasis on weight as my body composition was always in the athletic zone. However, it has become apparent to me, that I will not stop endurance racing anytime soon. I want two things: to be as fast as possible, and to race as safe as possible.

I want you to think about your whys. Right down the initial reasons that come into your head and then dig a little deeper. It could be a race goal, a fitness goal, a health goal, a quality of life goal. There are no wrong goals, there are no wrong whys, because they are yours and only yours. Once you are in touch with your deeper why, your motivation increases and it becomes harder to give up. Write down your goals, write down your whys. Look at them daily. Someday, if you have not already, there may be that tipping point that compels you to take action. The rest, will be history.

I wanted this update on my goals to get you thinking. I am getting closer to my goals. My weight is decreasing my body fat % is decreasing, and I have hit my long workouts(even though I cannot stand the thought of another long basement bike ride). I am confident. I am at ease. I am excited. I am working my ass off for my whys.

What are yours? I am here to help, after all that is my why for starting Foster Fitness. The joy of seeing someone crush a goal after hard work and perseverance is unexplainable. Foster Fitness is about YOUR goals.
