Melrose Middle School Students Win Engineering Awards
Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Tech Ed students recently won awards in the local 2013 West Point Bridge Design Contest, sponsored by the Boston Society of Civil Engineers.
Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Tech Ed students have won six out of the top 10 places in the 2013 Ralph Salvucci On-Line Bridge Contest. This contest is a local, sub-contest of the national West Point Bridge Design Contest open to students under 13 years of age. The national contest is hosted by the U.S. Military Academy, and the local contest is hosted by the Boston Society of Civil Engineers.
The purpose of the contest is to provide middle school students with a realistic introduction to engineering. The contest is open to all students K-12 in MA. Students use free software put together by West Point to design the cheapest bridge that can carry a truck successfully across a river. When you click on the truck button, the design comes to life and if it can't make it across - CRASH!
The top 10 design teams will receive awards at a banquet/ceremony May 9 at the Sheraton Needham.
