5/28/25 Bucket List
For the writing group in Melrose.
My Bucket list, if people know me, is to travel…travel near or far.

Many years ago a friends and I drove for 81 days; without a GPS. We drove down the east coast of the United States, across the south and up the west coast into Canada; and then across to Nova Scotia.
My Bucket list is to do this again; but 20 years ago was a long time ago.

Now I continue to have a wander lust. My friends say that I do not sit well except driving in the car.
I want to again visit the 48 states and travel to foreign lands.
Many people I know do not care much for driving, but I am most comfortable in my car of my small house in Maine. (Strange comparison but true).
I am relaxed looking out the window at the lake or driving route one all the way to Canada.
The beauty in this country is outstanding, colorful in any season. Highway driving is for speed, but the back roads are really for seeing.
There are small towns on parade day, or annual picnics in a small field, a tiny church or a large cathedral. You have Local shops to browse, and meet friendly people who speak with strange accents. Having to slow down where kids still play in the street in a village where every house has flowers and bird feeders in the front lawn.
Stopping for a little league game and sitting on a wooden bench and hearing the shouts of the parents as they point out their kids or grandkids.
Local restaurants where you can try sweet potato French fires drizzled with caramel sauce.
It is great stopping at places that have only 2 tables and a waitress that can tell you all about the local movies and Friday night suppers.
Just to drive again the White Mountains where you can see forever to an endless sky.
The Pacific Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico, or the chilly waters of Maine; just to take of my shoes and stand a few minutes with the waves brushing by.
There is a great blueberry pie restaurant just over the Canadian border, and the coal mines in Nova Scotia, silent and mysterious.
It is a world of peace and quiet; places to absorb into the soul; places once seen that you will always remember.
I very often remember my Bucket list in my head and my heart; and hopeful in my years to come there will be more wandering. The bucket is not full yet.
