Ell Pond Deserves Natural Grass Fields

Artificial turf fields are included in the current design for Ell Pond Park upgrades

The Melrose City Council's recent vote to move forward with a design study for Ell Pond Park upgrades is an important step. It should mark the beginning of a public conversation, not the end.

As plans for Ell Pond upgrades move forward, residents deserve a transparent discussion of the many risks of artificial turf. While synthetic fields are often presented as an easy solution, they come with significant drawbacks. Artificial turf can reach extreme temperatures, pollute soil and water with microplastics and other chemicals, increase injury risks, and require costly maintenance and replacement. Well-designed and properly maintained natural grass fields provide environmental benefits that artificial surfaces cannot.

Many of the Melrose City Councilors raised concerns about installing artificial turf athletic fields at Ell Pond, especially Ryan Williams and Kim Vandiver. The design phase is the time to make sure the City and its contractors weigh the environmental, health, and financial trade-offs of artificial turf compared to natural grass fields. Melrose residents can contact the Mayor's Office (mayorsoffice@cityofmelrose.org) and Parks Commission (rcarrillo@cityofmelrose.org), participate in upcoming discussions, and make their voices heard before final decisions are made about playing fields at Ell Pond.
