Former Melrose Principal Killed In Hit-And-Run

Allison Donovan, 40, was struck and killed Friday night in a Somerville crosswalk.

MELROSE, MA — A memorial at a Somerville intersection honoring the former principal of the Lincoln Elementary School is also asking drivers to slow down. Allison Donovan, 40, was struck and killed in a hit-and-run Friday night in Somerville, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office said.

Donovan was hit in the crosswalk at the intersection of Powderhouse Boulevard and Hardan Road around 7:16 p.m. She was taken to Mount Auburn Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Another woman was sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash and has since been released from the hospital.

Donovan was the Lincoln principal from 2015-17.

"During those two years with the Melrose Public Schools, she sought to lead the Lincoln community with kindness, good humor and concern for the well being of all our students," Melrose Superintendent Cyndy Taymore said in a statement. "She was well liked and respected by the entire Melrose Public Schools community."

Donovan was also a longtime teacher and administrator in Watertown Public Schools. When she left Melrose, it was to return to Watertown as an instructional coach.

"She brought invaluable knowledge, insights, compassion, and dedication to the district and was passionate about providing students with the best education possible," Dede Galdston, superintendent of Watertown Public Schools, said in a statement. "She will be greatly missed and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends at this most difficult time."

One sign at the Somerville intersection Sunday afternoon read "Slow Down for Allison." Another read "Gone Too Soon," with a picture of Donovan.

Police are still searching for the vehicle, believed to be a newer model, full-size black pickup truck with front-end driver's side damage, the DA's office said. There is a black cover over the bed of the truck, which is possibly a Ford F-150.
