MELROSE, MA — A GoFundMe has been established for the families of last week's sewage backup that ruined four Brazil Street homes. The page is looking to reach $10,000 to help assist those who not only were forced from homes, but lost clothes, furniture and more when sewage waste spewed through their homes.

"While insurance may cover very few loses, these families are left stranded with countless other costs including finding temporary housing, out of pocket cleaning costs, boarding of pets, and storage costs for what little clothing and possessions they could salvage," the GoFundMe reads. "These are wonderful people that would never ask for anything!"

The City of Melrose said Friday night it would help with emergency lodging for displaced residents and the storage pods at the homes. There's still an investigation into what caused the sewage backup, though residents said they were told DPW workers trying to fix the backup was what led to the sewage explosion.

City officials told Patch that cause and liability still need to be figured out, and then insurance companies will get involved. The City has not been able to guarantee full reparations to those affected.
