Today, July 4th, is certainly a day to celebrate the birth of a unique experiment that continues to evolve even today! An experiment begun 237 years ago which gave birth to this great nation, “one conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal”. Such lofty ideals! No other nation at that time had such lofty goals and yet fell so short in attaining them. However, this experiment continues to be a “work in progress” and well should it be. Men are mortal, have fatal flaws, error in judgment, and certainly can exhibit great biases and prejudices. So how can a nation with so many of these imperfections be expected to implement such lofty ideals? They simply didn’t back then and have not fully been implemented today.
Even now with all our technological, medical, and sociological advances, we struggle to attain our way in the world. However, our basic ideals, embodied in the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and our Constitution, should be our guiding beacon for the perfection we persistently pursue as a nation. Our story remains unfinished and our ideals not fully achieved. But there is hope and Divine Providence to encourage us all on our journey in achieving our ideals!
