Melrose Delegation Celebrates $75,000 Housing Choice Grant
Senator Lewis and Representative Lipper-Garabedian Celebrate $75,000 Housing Choice Grant Awarded to Melrose
BOSTON—Senator Jason Lewis and Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian applauded the announcement that the State awarded the City of Melrose a $75,000 Housing Choice Grant to re-write its zoning ordinance to be more accessible and pursue local changes identified in the recently approved Housing Production Plan.
State leaders joined together last week to celebrate this year’s Housing Choice Grant recipients. This grant is part of the Community One Stop for Growth program which streamlines municipal grant proposals that fund economic development projects related to community capacity building, planning and zoning, site preparation, building construction, and infrastructure.
The Housing Choice Grant Program is a competitive grant program that rewards municipalities with a Housing Choice Designation that have produced a significant number of housing units in the last five years and that have adopted or established Best Practices that encourage housing production.
“I’m very pleased to see this funding from the state to support efforts to update Melrose’s zoning ordinances,” said Senator Jason Lewis. “This project will help the city to advance its housing goals of encouraging a larger range of housing options, including more affordable housing, and of enhancing neighborhoods to promote community engagement and sustainability.”
"I'm thrilled that Melrose has been awarded $75,000 in State funds through the Housing Choice Program," said Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian. "These funds, which will be used to rewrite the City's zoning ordinance, will expand and enhance its housing supply, aligned not only to local priorities but also to statewide needs."
“We are honored that the State selected the City of Melrose to receive a Housing Choice Grant. As an early housing choice community, we are very excited to continue this process initiated by the House and receive the resources we need from the Commonwealth to advance this important work,” said Mayor Paul Brodeur.
