Melrose Firefighters Help Homeless Vets Heat Up

What started as an internal charity drive blew up once the community got involved.

MELROSE, MA — An internal Christmas mission by local firefighters turned into a citywide effort that will be helping those in need this winter.

Members of the Melrose Fire Department recently reached out to the New England Center for Homeless Veterans in Boston. The idea was to run a drive for warm clothes internally, firefighter Matt Arcovio told Patch, but once it hit social media, the community got involved.

The fire department ended up with more than 150 pieces of thermal gear - essentially long johns - for the homeless veterans at the shelter. Members of the department delivered them on Thursday.

"Our community, department and union pulled together to help an under served and most deserving group of men and women," Arcovio wrote on Facebook.
