Melrose High School Removes Dreamcatcher From School Logo

MELROSE, MA—Melrose High School's logo will temporarily be void of the dreamcatcher feathers, which have adorned the logo since the

Superintendent Cyndy Taymore told Patch that she has decided to remove the feathers temporarily, pending the larger discussion about the school's Red Raiders mascot and its Native American ties. Taymore also stated that the removal of the feathers was done on an interim basis, as the school plans to develop a mascot that honors its history.

"The decision regarding the logo and the mascot has the potential to be an emotional conversation," Taymore wrote."We would to respect the multiple points of view on this across the city via a process that allows all interested stakeholders to be heard."

A report from the Melrose Free Press, which broke the story, indicates that neither students, nor the School Committee, were involved in the decision.

Taymore also said that the school system is communicating with citizens and officials to for a process allowing all stakeholders to be heard, and a discussion. the next steps for identifying a mascot for Melrose High school will follow.
