The event showcased exceptional singers from 15 communities in the northeastern area. Approximately 400 students auditioned in November and were expected to prepare and perform a piece with an accompaniment track, along with a short sight reading component.

Students were scored according to the Massachusetts Music Educators Association Northeastern District rubric, which includes sections on melodic accuracy, rhythmic accuracy, tone quality, diction, interpretation and intonation. Based on their performance, only 200 students were chosen to be a part of the event.
