Melrose Looks to Residents to Help One of Their Own

At just 16, Sam Gilles made Melrose his home following the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Now he needs a little help to complete his dream.

Sam Gilles left Haiti after the 2010 earthquake and at just 16 years old relocated to Melrose in hopes for a better life and a good education.

The Sherlock family welcomed Gilles. He lived with them and proudly graduated from Melrose High, getting into Regis College in Weston. He is scheduled to graduate college in May.

Gilles is having a tough time getting the financial help he needs. He does not have U.S. citizenship, so he cannot receive financial aid, and Regis does not give athletic scholarships. Several fundraisers have helped him stay afloat, but he still owes more than $11,000. Without that money, Gilles cannot graduate.
