Melrose Residents: Here's How to Recognize the Signs of an Overdose

Melrose police offered tips Monday to help residents recognize the signs of overdose and how to combat addiction.

MELROSE, MA—The opioid epidemic has taken center stage for both law enforcement and legislators alike, making it the cornerstone issue for much of the commonwealth.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's most recent data which accounts for opioid-related overdose deaths from Jan. 2012 to Dec. 2014, there were nine opioid-related overdose deaths in Melrose during that time span. Four deaths were recorded in both 2013 and 2014, the most of any year during that span.

“Addiction is a disease that has taken the lives of many and it’s time to help our community members receive the assistance they need to recover,” Melrose Police Chief Michael Lyle said in a statement . “Residents need to be aware of what to look for and the proper steps to take when witnessing an opioid related drug overdose.”

Melrose Police offered tips and warning signs to residents Monday in order to help them combat addiction and to detect signs of an overdose:

If residents notice someone who is experiencing the following symptoms, immediately dial 911 and administer Nasal Narcan if on site:

  • Small, contracted pupils
  • Slowed or absent breathing
  • Extreme fatigue/loss of consciousness
  • Changes in heart rate
  • Slurred speech

The department also urged residents to keep Nasal Naloxone on hand if they fear that a loved one may be involved with opioid-related drugs or may be struggling with addiction.
