Melrose School Officials Diving Into MCAS Scores

Here is how the district did in the 2018 MCAS results released Thursday.

MELROSE, MA — Melrose Public Schools officials are taking their time in examining the 2018 MCAS results released Thursday.

This year's results are the first containing the state's new accountability system, which state education officials are calling a more comprehensive look. Melrose was classified as "not requiring assistance or intervention" because it was "partially meeting targets." Read more about the accountability system here.

Adding to the complication are two different sets of tests being evaluated: Next-generation and legacy. The next-generation MCAS tests were given in grades 3-8 and are in their second year of being administered. Officials have warned against rushing to judgements as they establish a baseline. Students in grade 10 took the legacy tests, which are in their last year of being administered. Read more about legacy and next-generation tests here.

Melrose is in the midst of a two-step process regarding the new testing, Superintendent Cyndy Taymore told Patch in an email.

Step one is the district leadership team getting a thorough understanding of the new accountability system and how it works. Step two is diving into the data on the most granular level - including data that isn't currently available to the public. Then all the principals will meet with the teachers and discuss the results.

Finally a presentation will be made to the School Committee. The presentation is scheduled for the Nov. 13 meeting.
