Police: Major Crime on Decline in Melrose

Crimes which are on the decline include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and larceny.

The Melrose Police Department saw an almost 14 percent drop in major crimes through the first half of 2015, Chief Michael L. Lyle announced Monday.

Crimes which are on the decline include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and larceny. These crimes are considered “FBI Part 1 Crimes.”

Zero rapes have been reported through the first half of 2015 as opposed to two documented cases at the same time in 2014. Aggravated assaults are down by over 16 percent, with 10 incidents reported this year as opposed to 12 in 2014.

The rate of burglary in the city has fallen by 19 percent. Larcenies are down by 14 percent. Robberies have slightly diminished as well.

“These statistics certainly show a continued dedication to community policing by the Melrose Police Department,” Chief Lyle said. “I commend our officers, who come to work every day committed to making the community a safer place to live, work and visit. I am hopeful that the numbers will continue to decrease as the year progresses.”

Motor vehicle thefts have elevated slightly, with nine this year as opposed to 8 last year. Two cases of arson have been reported as opposed to zero last year.
