When its mother began to beckon all of her poults to come closer to learn of both events, this little turkey said, "Not I."

Despite several pecks from its mother to get up and take part, instead it lay down in the dirt and said, "Please teach my sisters and brothers. As to learning the turnkey trot, I'd rather not. This August day is much too hot.

But what's a mother to do when her children won't listen?

She had to think quickly as rail trail hikers were approaching so fast

Maybe they wouldn't notice the turkey family as they passed

Her children were getting too tall

She could not really hide them at all

A disguise might be best

and a bit of a rest

It wasn't enough though.

Her children were moving much too slow.

Their family would surely be noticed

So mom kicked up some dirt and suggested her children do the same. The hikers did notice but enjoyed the turkey's game.

and that's the rail trail turkey tale of a hot day August day when hikers and turkeys shared the same pathway.
