'The Real Diehl' Comes To Melrose: Video

U.S. Senate candidate Geoff Diehl stopped by Tuesday afternoon, where Alderman Monica Medeiros announced her endorsement.

MELROSE, MA — Geoff 'The Real Diehl' Diehl and the real Diehl mobile made a stop in Melrose Tuesday afternoon. Alderman-At-Large Monica Medeiros endorsed the Republican ahead of the Sept. 4 primary for U.S. Senate.

Diehl was greeted by a dozen or so supporters, one of whom noted, "It's tough being a Republican in Melrose."

Indeed, Hillary Clinton got more than 65 of the Melrose vote in 2016. Still, President Trump got more than 4,700 votes. Republicans here are looking to make their voice heard.

"My goal is to let everybody know they are going to have a real in choice in [the general election in] November," Diehl told Patch when asked why it's so important to visit a city that isn't exactly teeming with Republicans. "I think this is really a critical election." (Watch Diehl and Medeiros speak below.)

Medeiros agreed.

"I think it's really important to remind people here that there are Republicans and conservatives and are an actual active group here," Medeiros said.

Diehl said U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is too busy campaigning for Democrats in swing states and more focused on the 2020 presidential election than the senate.

Speaking in front of the Melrose Police Department, Diehl and Medeiros rebuked recent comments made by Warren regarding the criminal justice system, comments which landed her in hot water.

"Senator Warren was wrong to call the entire criminal justice system racist," said Diehl. "It was a grossly irresponsible statement. Warren should be supporting our law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to keep our streets safe."

Diehl on Monday received The Boston Herald's endorsement. Tom Shattuck, who has lived in Melrose, is the Herald's new editorial page editor.

“I am proud to have Monica’s endorsement," Diehl said. "She has a wonderful record of honorably serving Melrose. No one works harder for Melrose than Monica. She has been a fierce advocate for the taxpayers and fight against opioid addiction."
