Red Hatters for March 2026

by Shirley Rabb

We did it! We made it through a blizzard ;and now we can look forward to the coming of spring, and changing our clocks ahead to daylight savings time.

Our first outing was on February 8th. when we went to see the Polymnia Choral Society perform. This performance took place at the Melrose Middle School auditorium, and the theme was The American Quilt.

The concert celebrated the origins of American music and it’s far reaching influence.

From the first enslaved African people that were brought to this country to folk, choral, gospel and jazz music.

Beautiful performances by the 50 members of the Polymnia choral society.

There were were songs by the Melrose High School Honor Choir,

the Xaverian Brothers High School Schola Cantorum , Talia Rose on guitar, and the beautiful voice of Laura Santamaria, soprano soloist that sang two wonderful songs.

It was an uplifting and emotional afternoon; with standing applause for Murray Kidd the artistic director, and Yerim Kang the pianist.

It was an early dinner for us locally to Liberty Bell, our favorite local spot.

It was a good day.. and we are looking forward to the Polymnia concert on June 6, at Memorial Hall. Join us there.

On March 12th we joined other members from the Melrose Senior center on two buses and headed for the Concord Museum.

Our first stop was lunch at the Main St. Market and Cafe.

Tables were being held for the group and the atmosphere was great and food a bit different but excellent. It goes on our list to "go again".

After lunch we sat outside waiting for the buses to return and then off to the Museum.

We all separated and took our own time to walk around.

It was quiet and peaceful and just looking at the past was relaxing.

There were pieces of furniture and clocks from he period and musket that helped win the battle.

There were pieces by Thoreau and a wall of pictures by Mary Merrick Brooks.

There were stories and maps as the British Marched from Boston to Concord and the famous bridge, where the first shot was fired to start the Revolutionary war in 1775.

March 13th and Dianne Edgecomb performed her story telling magic with Irish tales at the Stoneham Senior Center.

accompanied by Margot Chamberlain on the Iris harp.

Playing all the parts and making the audience contribute there appointed parts, Diane made every one feel Irish.

After the performance green cookies and small cakes were served. Always a good place, always a fun show with Diane Edgecombe.

Another favorite local Ninety Nine in Stoneham was our late lunch place. Free popcorn, good food and conversation made another great Red Hat day.

March 17...how could we pass this day up.

This year are choice was the Irish Cottage in Methuen.

We were dressed in a variate of greens around the clothes we were wearing. Green blouses , red hats with green ribbons, green neckties and the Irish Spirit. We arrived at 11:15 and we were told that there was a 2 hour wait. Not good! so we improvised...

Oh we had our corned beef and cabbage, carrots, potatoes, and all the fixings at....Kitty's in North Reading.

We got seated asap and had our drinks and ordered our St. Patrick's day meal which was brought to us in a timely manner

The food was excellent, the service great, and we took our time to enjoy a good deal of the meal, with a good deal of the meal to go.

There were a few other customers in shades of green and it was a good time.

On our way to Soc's for dessert we got a call from Irish Cottage to tell me that our table was ready. Two hours, she was right but we were happy where we were; and where we were going.

You can't beat Soc's for dessert. We did ourselves proud with a pistachio ice cream Sunday, good conversation, and food that had to go in the freezer for another meal of Corned Beef and Cabbage later in the week.

And now we end the month of March and head into warmer, sunny days with more places to go and more things to see.

Join us..
