Red Hatters for May 2026

by Shirley Rabb

May 2nd...Trinity Parish in Melrose.....Silent films with live music... What fun !

The music was supplied by the guest organist, Peter Krasinski.

The music is improvised live as the movie is playing. This is done after Peter has watched the film and added his musical ideas that work best with the central line, the characters, the action and location of the film. It was a unique performance to watch and listen.

There were two silent movies this evening; the first was "The Red Balloon" released in 1956. This was the story of a child that found a friend in a Red Balloon that followed him all over Paris. When his school friends finally captured the balloon and shot it down (with sling shots) an amazing thing happened. All the balloons , of all colors left wherever they were to join the small boy and fly him away in a blaze of color.

The second film was "The Cameraman" from 1928 with Buster Keaton as a Tin Type photographer who tries to win the affection of a girl who works at a new reel company.

Buster Keaton, who performed with his magical "stone face" did some very funny, scenes in the movie. There was an incredible scene at a public swimming pool, and a very mischievous monkey who stole the show. There was a battle in China Town that the Cameraman filmed while being chased around.

It was a wonderful evening to relive the past , in the present.

May 5th Cinco D Mayo and off to Tequilas in Wakefield to enjoy the food, the music and the holiday.

We were greeted by the very happy members of the staff. And we were seated before the restaurant started to fill up.

The food was a variate of Mexican everything, and all so good.

The music was loud; the Mexican puppet that one of the members brought danced all the time.

It was a great evening, close to home.

On May 7th. it was close to home again as we headed for the Melrose Senior Center.

Today's performance was "The Incredible Mae West" performed by Lynne Moulton and Fran Baron as the Madame Francesca.

Both ladies are part of the Delvena Theater Company that have done many shows that we have seen in the past.

The location for the play was the dressing room of Mae's as it was for her performance in Chickadee in 1940.

Mae kept the audience entertained with an insight into her fascinating 80 year show business career, her philosophy of life and, of course, her singing,.

Questions from the audience followed the performance and there were members in the audience that had see Mae West in Boston, and a few good stories came from that.

Fran Baron came on and filled in the balance on Mae Wests life;, films, writing, and entertainment career.

It was a fun filled hour for all.

May 9th and have finally got to see Sheryl Faye again. She had been preforming all around the country and we were glad she came to the Postal Museum in Weston.

Today's performance was her portrayal of Anne Frank. Sheryl brought memories of the young Jewish girl hiding out for four years with her family in the attic of a factory.

This was during the 2nd world war when Hitler was looking for and killing Jews, and other faiths.

Anne Franks memorable diary of that time is one of the best selling books even to this day.

And Sheryl Faye's performance was memorable as well.

It is always good to Sheryl work at any of her portrayal of

Historical Women.

Lunch was very good at the Chateau in Waltham ,with talk of the show and the falling rain.

May 21st it was a trip to Worcester with the Melrose Senior Center bus to see The Woo Sox play the Rochester Red Wings.

. It was quite a game..Nine innings of baseball and fun. Perfect weather to be sitting in the cool sunshine after these past days of unusual heat .The Worcester Red Sox rallied to tie the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning, and we had to get to the bus but the Rochester Red Wings scored 5 times in the top of the 11th inning to win.

Fun between each inning and a mascot that kept everyone amused even if we lost this one. It is after all Baseball Season win or lose.

The bus brought us back to Melrose around 4pm and it was a good day.

On May 26 I went to have lunch with some Red Hatters in Wells Maine. The restaurant is called Bull and Claw and the food is outstanding. The service very good and it always good to join with another group of Hatters wherever they are.

This month has flown buy as so many seem to do these days. We try to continue to find places and things to do as we get older; and the plan it to continue trying.

Stopping is not an option.!

f

Follow us through the summer....
