Road, Sidewalk Projects Planned Across More Than 25 Melrose Streets
Funding from a tax override will allow Melrose to meet its recommended spending levels for road work.
MELROSE, MA — Road and sidewalk improvements are planned on more than two dozen streets across Melrose this year as part of the city's ongoing roadway and utility improvement program, according to city officials.
The Department of Public Works is conducting road resurfacing, sidewalk repairs, curb work, and other safety improvements on streets throughout the city. Planned work includes projects on Crystal Street, Circuit Street, Hurd Street, Ashland Street, Richardson Avenue, Marvin Road, Renwick Road, West Wyoming Avenue, West Emerson Street, Swains Pond Avenue, Elm Street, Linden Road, Holland Road, Wentworth Road, Pilgrim Road, Standish Road, Owego Park, Emerson Place, Orris Place, Vinton Street, Maple Street, Wheeler Street, Hesseltine Avenue, Farwell Avenue, Ash Street and Ravine Terrace.
City officials said funding approved through the supplemental budget following the 2025 override will allow Melrose to meet its recommended annual spending levels for road and sidewalk improvements for the first time in more than a decade.

The additional funding also made it possible to add repaving and sidewalk projects on School Street, Sherwood Road and Melrose Street during this construction season.
As part of the roadway plan, speed humps will be installed on Howard Street. The city said the traffic-calming measure follows years of data collection, resident feedback and pilot traffic mitigation efforts.

The construction program also includes several sidewalk improvement projects. Planned work includes adding a sidewalk on Melrose Street between Warren Avenue and Volunteer Park, addressing sidewalk repair requests throughout the city and expanding sidewalk rehabilitation efforts on streets included in the paving program.
The supplemental budget also includes more than $200,000 for tree planting, dead tree removal and tree trimming. That funding supplements the Forestry and Parks Division's annual budget of approximately $880,000.
In addition to paving and sidewalk work, this year's construction program includes curbing, accessible curb ramps, intersection realignments and utility improvements to the city's water, sewer and drainage systems. The projects are being completed in accordance with the city's Complete Streets principles, which are intended to improve safety and accessibility.
