It always amazes me when good people decide to volunteer their time and energy, making family sacrifices to help their fellow citizens. I find this a very common trait in the people of Melrose. Take members of our illustrious school committee. All good people who want to help improve the school system and contribute to the success of all students. But something gets in their way to hinder the realization of their purpose along the long road to biweekly committee meetings. Perhaps it’s the need to always be right, or perhaps it is stubbornness in taking advice from others, or even more odious, perhaps it is a lack of clarity of judgment or the pursuit of personal ambition. One thing is for sure….they need to provide our new superintendent with more staff support and to allow her to freely exercise her experience and knowledge for the good of the students. And to do otherwise, will surely invite disastrous results.
