I’ve been giving this notion serious thought lately since I am a firm believer in elected government positions being as what our founders considered them to be…..held by people who want to serve their country in a temporary way. I don’t think that our founders ever envisioned elected officials making a career out of their government positions like so many of our senators and representatives in congress as well as many in local elected offices. I think that this is based on their reasoning that citizens should freely have the opportunity to serve their country and then go back to private life after performing this service. They perhaps did not envision that some people would find it very lucrative to remain in public office which allows them to build up a powerful political machine which would generate the political power to dissuade others from serving their government and corrupt the political system originally envisioned by our founding fathers. This situation serves no one including the disenfranchised, those without political clout, and ordinary citizens. Term limits works very well for office of President and would work equally as well for lower office holder such as Mayor. Two, four year terms is sufficient for anyone to serve the city, enact their agenda, and then move on to another job. Melrose has had 20 different Mayors since 1901and the average number of years served by each Mayor is less than 6 years. It’s time to implement term limits for the office of Mayor.
