The newest advance in nail technology is shellac. It is hard enough to protect manicured nails for weeks. And it doesn't lose its shine, said , who chooses it for her own nails. (see photo gallery)
MacDonald, who opened her business in 1975, in Framingham, has had to keep up with changing technology and fashion. Shellac, introduced about a year ago, is a winner, she said.

"I could fall on cement, and scrape my nails, and this won't go anywhere," she said, displaying a perfect looking set of coral nails.
Nails are just a part of the salon, of course. The business, spread over several buildings on East Main Street, also provides hair, makeup, skin treatments, 'Smart Lipo," and tanning, among other services. MacDonald has more than 70 employees.
In Milford, demand is increasing among men for services. And women of all ages want different finishes for their nails, MacDonald said.
The finishes vary tremendously, and can incorporate subtle sparkles, a silk texture, even crackles, depending on customer preference. MacDonald even has a small machine that can apply images, like the Bruins emblem, or a photograph, to someone's nails.
Every manicure is finished with a spray to help set it. "It smells like a million dollars," MacDonald said.
