Abby Kelley Foster Returns to Hopedale!
Historical interpreter Victoria Belisle will present, through reenactment, the thoughts and ideas of the famous 19th century abolitionist and suffragist.
“Over the highway she helped build, slaves walked to freedom; and over the highway whose foundation stones she laid with bleeding hands, women are marching to their equal rights.”
--Lucy Stone, speaking about Abby Kelley Foster
* Her home, Liberty Farm, was an important stop on the Underground Railroad!
* Advocated full civil equality for blacks, not just abolition!
* Key speaker at the first national Women’s Right Convention in Worcester in 1850!
* Encountered constant criticism for her public activism as a woman working alongside and lecturing to men!
* Promoted radical “non-resistance”, like Adin Ballou, opposing all war and all forms of government coercion!
“I rejoice to be identified with the despised people of color. If they are to be despised, so ought their advocates to be .”
