MILFORD, MA — Milford High School students heard a firsthand account of survival during World War II on Thursday when Holocaust survivor, author and speaker Janet Applefield visited the school.
Milford Public Schools said Milford High School hosted Applefield on Thursday morning for a presentation to juniors about her experience escaping and surviving Nazi-occupied Poland during the Holocaust. The district said students heard about the loss of Applefield’s family members, friends and community, and about the courage and determination that shaped her survival.
“Her story of courage, resilience, and determination is truly remarkable and inspiring,” the school district said in a statement on Thursday. “Being witness to history and sharing the personal story of a survivor of the Holocaust is a privilege for our students.”
Applefield is the author of Becoming Janet: Finding Myself in the Holocaust. She arrived in the United States in 1947 and later built a career as a licensed clinical social worker and public speaker, according to her website.
Her biography also says she spoke before the Massachusetts Legislature in 2021 when the state passed genocide education legislation.
Milford Public Schools thanked Applefield for sharing her story with students, calling the opportunity to hear directly from a Holocaust survivor meaningful for the school community.
