MILFORD, MA — A hospital in Milford has earned a certification from The Joint Commission.
UMass Memorial Health-Milford Regional Medical Center has earned Primary Stroke Center certification after demonstrating compliance with clinical practice guidelines, performance measures, and quality improvement standards for stroke care. The designation followed a one-day onsite survey in March, the hospital said.
Milford Regional is a 148-bed nonprofit, acute-care teaching hospital at 14 Prospect St. serving patients from more than 20 communities in Central Massachusetts.
The hospital system says stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term disability in the United States. Prompt, specialized care can improve survival and recovery for patients experiencing a stroke or transient ischemic attack.
“This certification is a great milestone for Milford Regional Medical Center and enhances the strength of care provided throughout the UMass Memorial Health system,” said Dr. Adalia Jun-O’Connell, a vascular neurologist, medical director of quality and stroke director at Milford Regional Medical Center.
Jun-O’Connell said the newly certified Primary Stroke Center complements the existing Comprehensive Stroke Center at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
“We demonstrated our commitment to providing exceptional healthcare services to our community with dignity, compassion and respect, proving that we are delivering the high-quality, data-driven, evidence-based care to patients experiencing stroke and transient ischemic attack through this honorable certification,” Jun-O’Connell said.
The certification means patients treated at Milford Regional will receive faster diagnosis and treatment, care from specially trained stroke experts available around the clock, evidence-based care aligned with national guidelines and coordinated care from emergency response through recovery.
The designation also includes ongoing quality monitoring and improvement using nationally recognized performance measures.
“Dr. Jun-O’Connell and her team are to be congratulated for advancing stroke care for our patients,” said Dr. Peter Smulowitz, chief medical officer at Milford Regional. “Every second counts when a patient suffers a stroke, and this achievement recognizes the unparalleled standard of care we provide to our patients — in their community, close to home.”
