Andrew Lam - Saving Sight & Two Sons of China

Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at the Milford Town Library, 80 Spruce Street, Milford, MA

Dr. Andrew Lam, an author and retinal surgeon from Springfield, Massachusetts, will be discussing his recently published books, Saving Sight and Two Sons of China.  Dr. Lam is currently an Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine.

In Saving Sight, Dr. Lam takes readers into the operating room, revealing the stress of a job that enables him to turn darkness into light, and in which failure can mean blindness.  The book offers a gritty, unflinching look at a surgeon’s approach to eye trauma, cataracts, LASIK, retinal detachments, macular degeneration and more.  Lam also bends his personal story with profiles of ophthalmology’s greatest heroes, innovators whose inventions saved the sight of millions around the world.

Prior to becoming a surgeon, Lam earned a history degree at Yale.  His second book, Two Sons of China, is an historical novel from a forgotten theater of World War II.  The book centers on an unlikely friendship between an America soldier and a Chinese Communist guerilla fighter who, despite their deeply held, clashing convictions, form a bond of brotherhood in battle.  The story was inspired by the little-known, real-life Dixie Mission of 1944, in which Americans ventured to Mao Zedong’s northern stronghold of Yenan to investigate reports that the Chinese Communists were effectively fighting the Japanese, and to consider arming Mao’s troops with U.S. weapons.
