MILFORD, MA — A brush fire broke out Tuesday afternoon in Milford, and several local fire departments responded to put out the blaze.

The fire was first reported around 4 p.m. in an area behind Dilla Street near the Milford Quarries. The fire grew large enough that smoke was billowing out over I-495, fire officials said.

To put the fire out, crews from Holliston, Hopkinton, Upton, and the state Department of Conservation were called to respond. Hopedale firefighters helped provide coverage as Milford firefighters worked on the fire.

Also on Tuesday, State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey asked the public to be on guard for a heightened brush fire season this spring. The ground is dry right now, and spring plants are still sprouting. Add strong winds and the late winter burning season, you have a recipe for brush fires, he said.

"Early spring is typically the time when firefighters are busy fighting brush fires. As the season changes, the winds can be strong and unpredictable," he said.
