Developer Backs Off Plans To Add Amazon Van Parking

Instead of adding more spacing to Milford's Quarry Square, a new plan to restructure existing spots was agreed.

MILFORD, MA- No addition parking spots will be added to Milford's Quarry Square after a local developer came to Tuesday night's planning board meeting with a new proposal, backing off their original plan to add spots for Amazon subcontractors.

A representative for Quarry Square Realty Trust came to the planning board in December for approval to add 137 new spaces. The board requested a traffic study before approving the plan with several members raising concerns about traffic jams in the area.

At Tuesday night's meeting Dale MacKinnon, from engineering firm Guerriere and Halnon, proposed a new plan that did not add any more spaces but shuffled them around the existing area and to the North East corner of the lot where the company requested to pave.

"What we’re asking for is the same quantity that was approved, but we’re asking for these new locations for the parked cars,” MacKinnon said.

The new plan attempts to address the planning boards previous concerns that the vans created traffic problems in the area, and didn't park in designated spots. In the new plan 136 of the 266 Amazon spots that are currently in front of the old Stop & Shop location will be moved to the new parking area in the northeast corner and 50 spot that sit on the other side of the lot will moved one row south. MacKinnon said the new organization of spots will be easier to maintain. "Keeping drivers in the appropriate locations- we think this will give you what you want," he said.

The new plan was approved by the Planning Board in a 4:1 vote with Patrick Kennelly being the only dissenting vote, as he was last time.

“Am I to conclude now that Amazon’s needs have changed, and they no longer require as many vans?” Kennelly asked. MacKinnon could not answer the question.
