Finance Committee Votes Against Property Tax Offset Figure

A recommendation to use $2.8 million to offset property taxes was was not endorsed by the finance committee.

A proposal from the selectmen to use $2.8 million to offset the town’s $5.7 million budget surplus has been rejected by the finance committee.

The board voted 7-4 against the recommendation according to the Milford Daily News, after a discussion where some members wanted to use the money to benefit the taxpayers while others wanted more money put away.

Considered to be a one-time occurrence, the town received a $5.7 million budget surplus for fiscal year 2015. Member Robert Devita recommended using $2 million based on a recommendation from the finance director.

Despite the vote, whether Milford taxpayers will receive the offset or not will be decided at Town Meeting.
