Inmate Automotive and Job Training Program Opens at Milford Department of Corrections
The inmates in the program will have a chance to work in a repair garage.
MILFORD, MA — Lt. Governor Karyn Polito last week presided over the grand opening of the new Automotive Technology Program for the Baker-Polito Administration’s Department of Correction (DOC) in Milford. The Automotive Technology Program was developed to provide inmates with skills and certifications that they can use to gain employment upon their release back into the community, said the announcement.
“Through this innovative program, inmates will develop the skills they will need to get their foot in the door of an automotive repair facility upon release,” said Governor Charlie Baker in a statement. “Along the way, they will develop crucial elements for success such as learning to work with others as part of a team and the tools to support themselves and their families.”
Polito spoke with inmates enrolled in the program while touring the facilities, which are located at DOC headquarters.

“Making the successful transition from incarceration back into society is fraught with challenges, not the least of which is bridging the skills gap,” said Polito in a statement. “This program helps inmates prepare for a successful and productive life and career within their communities.”
The inmates in the program will have a chance to work in a repair garage to become familiar with the tools of the trade, and also learn the terminology used in the field. This 10-month program provides students with instruction in basic repair and preventative maintenance of vehicles. Students will be taught procedures on shop operation, safety, tool usage and looking up vehicle service data and specifications.

“We are pleased to put this program into place at no cost to taxpayers through the Massachusetts Correctional Industries (MassCor) program,” said Public Safety Secretary Dan Bennett. “This Administration and MassCor recognize the value this endeavor provides – including skills for those returning to society so they can be successful and support their families upon release.”
Students also receive OSHA 10 General Industries training to obtain an OSHA certification card. Instructional delivery includes presentations, and hands-on practice. During the course, students will also earn a Mobile Air Conditioning (MACS) Certification; a Certificate of Completion which will list the amount of hours spent in the program, and will prepare participants to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) General 1 test for Auto Maintenance and Light Repair.
