MILFORD, MA — Massachusetts is joining states around the country in taking action against TikTok, a popular social media app. State Rep. Michael Soter (R-Bellingham) has proposed a bill that would ban TikTok on devices owned by state, local, and county governments, according to NBC-10 Boston. The bill does not affect private users.

TikTok is a Chinese company with ties to the Chinese government. Carnesi is among those who see the popular app as a cybersecurity threat. TikTok has access to its users' personal information, which critics could fall into the hands of the Chinese government.

More than half of US states have enacted full or partial bans of TikTok from government devices. The company called the charges against it "unfounded," CNN reported.

In Massachusetts, some state agencies operate TikTok accounts, including the state Department of Public Health and MassDOT.
