Milford Democrats Open Annual Scholarship Contest

The scholarship contest challenges local students to write an essay about diversity and inclusion.

MILFORD, MA — The Milford Democratic Town Committee is now accepting submissions for its 2020 scholarship essay contest. The winning student will get a $500 scholarship, and winners will be announced in May.

The Milford Democratic Town Committee is pleased to announce its annual scholarship essay contest.For the third consecutive year, the Milford DTC will award $500 to the student who submits the winning essay. The essay must be between 400 and 600 words in length, and address the following prompt.

The preamble to the Platform for the Democratic Party of 2016 stated:

"Above all, Democrats are the party of inclusion. We know that diversity is not our problem — it is our promise. As Democrats, we respect differences of perspective and belief, and pledge to work together to move this country forward, even when we disagree. With this platform, we do not merely seek common ground — we strive to reach higher ground.

"We are proud of our heritage as a nation of immigrants. We know that today’s immigrants are tomorrow’s teachers, doctors, lawyers, government leaders, soldiers, entrepreneurs, activists, PTA members, and pillars of our communities. We believe in protecting civil liberties and guaranteeing civil rights and voting rights, women’s rights and workers’ rights, LGBT rights, and rights for people with disabilities. We believe America is still, as Robert Kennedy said, 'a great country, an unselfish country, and a compassionate country.'"

In an essay of between 400 and 600 words, answer the following question:

In the face of growing challenges from social diversity and economic and social inequality, how can the Democratic Party keep the promise of this progressive and inclusive philosophy and inspire the nation and the world?

The contest is open to any graduating high school senior living in Milford. Students should submit their essays to their school's guidance office by March 28. The Milford DTC will announce the award winners in May. The Milford Democratic Town Committee meets the fourth Monday of every month.
