Spirit of Giving: 5 Nonprofits to Support in Milford

MILFORD, MA—It's easy to find a charity. Throw a dart and you'll hit some group, somewhere, raising money for some cause. But perhaps you want to keep it truly local, and help the neighbors around you or the organizations that operate right in your community.
The season of giving is just around the corner. As our jack o'lanterns start to rot on the front steps, thoughts of Thanksgiving, winter, helping, kicks in to our thoughts.
Here is a list of five nonprofit organizations operating or helping in Milford. Learn more about them.

- Milford Humane Society: an all-volunteer, non-profit, no-kill shelter for stray and abandoned cats. First organized in September 1990 to fill a need in the community, the organization help to care and find homes for the ever-increasing number of homeless cats that exist in the local area.
- Evergreen Center: a nonprofit, residential school, serving children and adolescents with Autism or intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Daily Bread Food Pantry: Trinity Church was one of the six churches who joined together to found the Daily Bread Food Pantry in 1991. The Pantry is run totally by volunteers and is funded by donations of food and money from local churches, businesses, civic groups and individuals. Food can be left in baskets at the back of the Church each Sunday, or it can be taken directly to the Pantry on Monday evenings between 6-8 p.m. Trinity has a rotating list of volunteers who deliver the food every Monday. Volunteers also help pack the food for clients or supervise on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m.
- Spina Bifida Association of Greater New England:organization working to support people with Spina Bifida as they reach for their goals and pursue a more fulfilling life. SBAGNE is a group of parents, adults with Spina Bifida, and dedicated professionals working together to support and encourage families and individuals throughout the Greater New England area. The goal is to enrich the lives of those affected by Spina Bifida through education, parental support, social networking, advocacy and public awareness.
- Thanks To Yanks: a non-political 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to support military members, veterans and their families. This organization, founded by Michael Shain in 2006, began with a 9/11 Tribute Dinner to recognize the sacrifices military families endured in response to the 9/11/01 attack on America.
