B-SAFE Campers Enjoy a Week of Fun, Food and Friendship

St. Michael's parishioners and local eateries help ensure area youths "B-SAFE" this summer

From Monday, July 20 to Friday, July 24, parishioners at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Milton gave back to the community by volunteering for B-SAFE – the Bishop’s Summer Academic and Fun Enrichment summer day camp – at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Mattapan. Monday through Thursday, parishioners prepared, delivered, and served lunch to approximately 80 elementary school campers and counselors. On Friday, the group of campers and counselors enjoyed a fun and educational field trip from Long Wharf in Boston to Spectacle Island in Boston Harbor.

The week’s activities were made possible by food and monetary donations from St. Michael’s parishioners. Support for the Friday outing to Spectacle Island came from area businesses including sandwiches from Abby Park (550 Adams St, Milton) and Ashmont Grill (555 Talbot Ave, Dorchester), ester (2261 Dorchester Ave, Dorchester Center) The Plate (27 Central Ave, Milton), and Steel & Rye (95 Eliot St, Milton). Star Market also provided a gift certificate and Boston Harbor Cruises provided ferry tickets for all participants to and from Spectacle Island.

The Mattapan B-SAFE camp is one of six B-SAFE locations in the Boston area and provides a safe, fun, academically enriching environment for elementary and middle school students to enjoy the summer months. B-SAFE also offers meaningful work experience for teens and young adults hired as counselors-in-training and staff.
