The Nutshell is a cozy children’s clothing boutique on the second floor of the Bassett Street shops, outfitting children from newborn to size 14 for girls and size 10 for boys. The bright, child-friendly environment offers an array of styles and brands from international companies, including Tea Collection from San Francisco and Joules from Great Britain, as well as flower girl outfits and First Communion wear for those special childhood moments.
According to store owner Nancy Doyle, the Nutshell has been one of the longest running retailers in Milton, coming into existence more than 40 years ago as the creation of Francis Field, former owner and Milton resident.

Doyle described the original location as the “little red house” across from Thomas Family Dental on Adams Street and said the business moved to the current spot nearly 30 years ago.
The Toy Chest, the store’s toy section, was introduced in 2007 and sells a unique variety of educational, specialty and classic toys that are not found at a chain store.

Doyle said the store's success is due to the “supportive residents of Milton and being able to pull customers from surrounding areas,” with their reputation of attentive and knowledgeable customer service.
“We do complimentary gift wrapping on presents and our staff pays attention to detail and knows what we’re offering,” said Doyle, as she wrapped a science kit for a customer who telephoned looking for a quick birthday present. “We’ve played with all the toys so we know how they work and what’s appropriate."
The Toy Chest sets itself apart, since it specializes in educational and classic toys.
“We never have what’s advertised on TV by the big names,” said Doyle, adding the best toy is one that’s “secretly educational."
The convenience of two-in-one shopping for children’s clothing and toys, knowledgeable staff and hometown appeal make The Nutshell and the Toy Chest local treasures.
