Eat, Drink and Square Dance at Thayer Nursery's Winedown

As a way to thank customers and work with other business owners, the nursery is hosting a free event Saturday.

The busiest part of the year is winding down at Thayer Nursery so to celebrate the summer and thank their loyal customers, the owners are hosting the First Annual Thayer Nursery Winedown on Saturday, June 26.

The event is part pig roast, part wine tasting and all hoedown complete with square dancing. From 3 to 7 p.m. guests are invited to the entirely free event at the nursery.

For the last two years, Thayer Nursery has held a Halloween event in the fall and for the last six years, a Christmas event in the winter.

Maggie Oldfield, who runs the family business with her brother Josh, said they've wanted to host a spring/summer event, but never had an appropriate theme. That was until vendor Bruce McCue of McCue Gardens mentioned he has been a square dance caller for 49 years.

Though she's never square danced before, Oldfield said she's looking forward to learning.

From there the collaborative event fell into place. Oldfield is working with other local and regional business owners for the Winedwon. Outlook Farm, Westhampton MA, will be roasting the 120-pound pig as well as bringing sausage, bacon and vegetables.ย  Bon Caldo Ristorante in Norwood, MA will be sending executive chef Adam LaLiberte to give wine tastings. Cakes Cafรฉ and Bakery in Milton will also be joining the festivities with samples.

Oldfield said since the nursery opened in 1965, they've tried to work with other businesses. "It's nice when we're able to work together," said Oldfield of the other businesses involved in the Winedown.

The event comes at a perfect time for residents to have a good time in their hometown. With school ending yesterday, Oldfield hopes that plenty of people will make it to the event before taking off on vacation.

Aside from being an open community event, the Winedown is an opportunity for the Oldfields to thank their customers, many of which have been shopping at Thayer since their father Bob Oldfield ran the farm.

Oldfield said she has begun to see a second generation of customers.

The nursery will also be open during the event for participants who would like to shop.
