Fontbonne Academy Soccer Looks for One More Win in 2010
A preview of 2010 Fontebonne Academy Soccer season.
The 2009 season was full of growing pains, missed opportunities and personal struggles for Fontbonne Academy's girls soccer team.
The Ducks fell just short of a playoff appearance last season after they failed to come away with a win in their last game of the season. They had to integrate five freshmen onto the team and deal with the personal tragedy of a teammate.
But all those struggles could make for a strong, mentally tough team in 2010. At least that's the hope of head coach Paul Piotrowicz.

"I expect a lot and I'm really looking forward to this year," said Piotrowicz, who has seen a lot in his 24 years at the helm. "I don't think we have as many pure soccer players and club players that other teams have, but I think this is a very intelligent team. All the girls are smart and I think we are going to be working mind over skill."
The key to the season, as it usually comes down to in soccer, is the stability between the pipes for Fontbonne. According to Piotrowicz he has the best goaltender in school history.

Nicole Derba will be entering her senior season and "the pulse of the team" will need to be just that in order for the Ducks to make it into the MIAA tournament.
"She's a great kid and a very, very good goalie," said Piotrowicz. "I would say she is the best goalie that Fontbonne has ever had. She really takes the position seriously."
Derba needs to be an extension of the coach on the field and Piotrowicz said she takes on that role with a lot of pride.
"She's very good with her communication to me," he said. "She has no problem telling me if there is a problem going on within the team. She wants to resolve it. The girls trust her."
Piotrowicz will also be relying on a defensive unit that may feature all seniors, which would be a first according to the long-time head coach. He will also be looking for the younger players to take a bigger step forward in year two.
If all of these variables add up, there could be a playoff appearance in the future. That hope still excites Piotrowicz after all of these years.
"I'm excited to coach this team," he said.
